Summer Housing

So - I'm signed up for summer housing, and in a sweet room - a 2-room double as a single. But I definitely don't need that much space, and I'm only going to be working around 3 1/2 days a week. I'm contemplating just living at home, since it'll save ~$1400. But of course, campus life is pretty awesome. Anyone have any opinions on campus living vs home?

What a great weekend! There were some fun end-of-the-year parties on Friday night, and Sunday/Monday Alex and Andrew from Synergy and Improv class came up to Aptos with Navid and me. It was a really relaxing time - the first I've had in a while; a lot of reading and quiet walking and conversation. We were on the beach in Rio Del Mar for most of Sunday afternoon, picnicking and playing frisbee and burying Andrew in the sand and then building a driftwood skeleton over him (pics below), and then bought some veg and simple ingredients at Staff of Life and cooked up a really good meal for dinner and remade the leftovers into breakfast omelettes and rice porridge. We got 2 meals for 4 people out of $25, which was pretty amazing. The entire dinner conversation was improv'd, each pair of people representing one person and alternating their words to make their half of the conversation. It was interesting how collective consciousness themes default to animals, sex, and...well, robots were kind of recurring but I don't really know what the hell that was. Alex and Andrew slept on the balcony under the stars - something I've resolved to do next time I visit - and the next day we basically just read and talked. Chill times.

I don't know what it is lately but I've just been tired. And when I turn in for the night I've got this weird sort of insomnia, where I'm not at all annoyed that I'm not sleeping, and where my body pretty much falls asleep, but my mind keeps running full-blast. I don't know whether I'm burnt out or whether I'm just idling.

Had coffee with Hayley this afternoon. Haven't seen her since late 2001, so it's been a long time. She's been bouncing between Reno and UCSB and now San Diego; and now her and Mike have settled down in SD and are living the post-college - one might say post-apocalyptic - life o' routine that we're all so fast approaching. Wayne was absolutely awesome and came all the way down just to give me a ride to Mike's in Sunnyvale, but he could only do so one way, but Mike was able to give me a ride back. We reminisced about Pinewood and caught up in that wonderfully cursory way that happens when you haven't seen someone in a while, but it was awesome to hang with her again. Driving the 10 hours back and forth from UCSB to come to my senior prom was still the coolest thing anyone's ever done.

On Thursday I picked up the digital camera; I love that thing. I broke it in at Terra's 80s party last night, so my journal entries should start having more pics with them. It can take movies, too, which is doubly awesome.

Dinner with Bryan too; we got gyros on University and then went to the Peninsula and got milkshakes. We're going to hit up the Indian buffet next weekend, if anyone wants to come.

Maybe I'm going to Genderfuk tonight?

What a great, weird weekend. Driving around Saturday night in the scooter I passed by some drunk girls and one was like, "Hey baby, I want to go for a ride. Can I scoot with you?" and pelvic thrusted the hell out of the last sentence. That's happened a couple of times before, but after I'd gone about half a block one of the other girls comes stumble-sprinting toward me, windmilling her arms, and shouting, "SAM! SAAAAM! IS THAT YOU IN THE SCOOTER? WAIT SAM!"

Then Sunday morning Lou IMs me and says, "Come to the Quad at 2. You'll like it." And it was pretty fantastic. It was Community Day, so hundreds of families were out around the Oval and the mouth of the Quad, but I was pretty certain as I drove past the pony rides that this was not what Lou had in mind. But what did he have in mind? A 10-foot tall alien, played by Henry's brother Will on spring stilts, chasing Daniel the helpless marine around the Quad. We eventually took the group through the hordes of children and got literally dozens of people to follow us. One little girl took the side of "the monster" and kept pointing out Daniel.

The most fun I've had in a while. Most of SGS (26 of us) went out to dinner at Chili's after that, which was nice.

Right now I'm trying to decide for disability draw whether I want to put Kairos or Columbae as my first choice. I hadn't anticipated Columbae being a possibility, but they're renovating it this summer and I think it will be. Also, if anyone knows how I contact Theta Chi to live there over the summer, let me know.

I want to get a really small digital camera. Size, more than picture quality, is the issue, but I would like something where the pics look decent on the computer. Price is a pretty big issue too. Any suggestions what I should go for?
